What kind of money is used in Japan?
In Japan, the currency is the Yen.
To know what’s the value of one yen recommend using the excellent currency converter of Yahoo: http://finance.yahoo.com/currency-converter/#from=JPY;to=EUR;amt=1
Here, on the official website of the Bank of Japan you can see the notes and coins currently valid: http://www.boj.or.jp/en/type/list/yuko/okane.htm
Is advisable to change a certain amount of your currency into Yen before leaving your country, because credit cards are not always accepted in the Japanese stores.
As example, for an holiday of 16 days, with 1000 Euros in cash you should have no problems. Added to that money you have still the cost of hotels (which we paid by credit card).
In our case we had several credit cards to avoid problems if someone did not work.
Almost all automatic food or drink distributors in Japan give the rest.
The coinlockers for the storage of luggages at JR stations does work using 100Yen coins and do not give the rest.
